During the French colonial period, hillstations, or small towns, were established in the central highlands and other high altitude regions of Vietnam to provide an escape from the high heat of summer. The most popular and well known of these, as well as best preserved, is Dalat. Located under an hour flight's time from Saigon, Dalat retains much of it's French architecture, including a cathedral, post office, and hundreds of villas that dot the forested hills around the town's central lake area.

Dalat Forests
Dalat Valley

Dalat also features some of the best off-road cycling in Vietnam and we arrange this mountain bike tour to include some of the more picturesque and interesting riding in the area, from single track, to deserted secondary roads (below right) and footpaths winding through hilltribe villages, pine forests, and farms.

Central Highlands
Empty Jungle Roads

After exploring one of Vietnam's most beautiful (and cooler) areas on mountain bike, we'll enjoy a spectacular, mostly downhill ride from Dalat passing through farms, hilltribe villages, local towns, and countryside until we reach the warm tropical coastline at Phan Thiet, riding along the water onto the white sand beaches of Mui Ne. The blue waters and soft sand of Mui Ne will provide a pleasant end to our cycling journey from the mountains to the sea.

In Mui Ne, we can continue our biking, spinning in the area the next day, or simply lazing on the beach or at the pool. Those with water sports in mind may enjoy some kite surfing which has become immensely popular in the last few years.

Cycling to Mui Ne
High Palms En Route to Mui Ne

After a day in Mui Ne, transfer back to Saigon to end our trip. For extended cycling and other adventures, consider combining this trip with two World Heritage Sites, one the prize of Southeast Asia: the grand Khmer Temples at Angkor in neighboring Cambodia, and our kayak trip in the karst wonderland of Halong Bay.

Note: We can arrange almost any option for longer or shorter tours in the central highlands — or in conjuntion with our other trips, such as cycling in the Mekong Delta, Central Coast, or Kayaking on Halong Bay. Please contact us for more information on private tours, including cross-border or inclusive of outdoor activities such as kayaking and trekking, and cultural activities, such as cooking and language lessons, home visits and stays, service learning and volunteering. This trip is suitable for children over 17 years of age. VeloAsia is a proud supporter of Room to Read.
